Introduction to Creative Writing

In this introductory seminar, students will explore their voices in the craft of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry while reading among contemporary exemplars of the genres. Drawing on the expertise of Ursula K. Le Guin in Steering the Craft (2015) and Mary Oliver in A Poetry Handbook (1994), we will experiment with elements such as description, point of view, and dialogue as well as diction, tone, and image to discover our own tendencies and motivations in the written word. From these foundations, we will commence peer workshops of our two major assignments, a prose piece of 2–4,000 words and five pages of poetry. The course will culminate in a portfolio of revised work and a reflection on our artistic development throughout the semester.
