ENGL4340: Renaissance Drama (60337)

Gilreath, Philip

TR 9:35 AM

Park Hall 144

This semester we will read dramatic works by sixteenth- and seventeenth- century playwrights of the British Isles… Not counting William Shakespeare. Students can expect to read plays by Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Margaret Cavendish, and Elizabeth Cary: a mix of the usual suspects and some important, yet lesser-known writers. We will cover city comedies, revenge tragedies, and court masques.

The first few required texts are available at the UGA bookstore: VolponeThe Spanish Tragedy, and The Roaring Girl. We will spend our early meetings determining the rest of our reading list for the semester. Assignments will include short, low-stakes responses, database research, and a creative final project for which students will plan an adaptation—film, podcast, or other format—of one of the plays from this semester.

This course will meet in-person, but students should regularly check eLC for assignments and resources.
