George Orwell once described Rudyard Kipling, of English descent but born in India, as “an Englishman, but of a rather doubtful kind.” Almost fifty years later, Hanif Kureishi portrayed the main character of The Buddha of Suburbia (of Indian descent but born in England) as “a funny kind of Englishman.” Why do these writers hesitate to to identify/be identified with Britishness? This course is dedicated to the exploration of decolonization, racial and gendered identity, national belonging explored by British and Anglophone literature (literature written in English by authors from formar colonies).  An underlying theme of our discussion will be the definition of “home;” we will address how these authors problematize the idea of home, both for the colonizer and the colonized, forcing them, at times, to become exiles in their places of birth.
