ENGL4770: Twentieth-Century Amer Poetry (60346)

Rosenbaum, Susan

MWF 1 :50 PM

Park Hall 144

This course will introduce you to central developments in twentieth-century American poetry, particularly free verse and the range of poetic experiments that followed. We will pay close attention to each poet’s aesthetic aims and formal strategies, and will also consider historical and cultural contexts for their work. Students will write short essays and a final research paper. In addition, over the course of the semester each student will write and present a book review on a contemporary book of poetry. While this course imparts knowledge of particular poets and poems, it no less importantly seeks to develop your powers of textual analysis and your ability to express your ideas clearly and effectively in writing.
