ENGL4331: Shakespeare On Film (67467)

Iyengar, Sujata

Park Hall 0144

ENGL 4331, Shakespeare on Film (67467)

NB: There's an optional movie screening to go with this course that will meet in our room -- Park 144 -- on Friday nights from 6pm-9pm. (If you don't go to the screenings, you can watch the films in your own time -- just be sure to watch them!)

We'll read four plays and watch three films or film adaptations of each. That’s twelve films total. Most of the films are under two hours long but we do have some that are close to three, so budget your time accordingly.

Materials

Books

The Arden Shakespeare, Third Series, Complete Works (2020), ISBN: 9781474296366

USED is fine as long as you are sure you have ordered the THIRD SERIES; since the films cut the scripts, we need to share the same Shakespeare text. If you prefer single volumes, use the ARDEN 3RD SERIES editions of each play (just search e.g. "Macbeth Arden 3" on Amazon and you'll see both new and used copies of the play for sale).

Nearly all the films are available for free to students who are signed into SWANK DIGITAL Campus via the UGA Libraries (you can watch remotely but you do have to login with your UGA MyID). Navigation: www.libs.uga.edu-> databases-> Swank Digital Campus->search title; if more than one comes up, search director. You can also search via date but sometimes databases list those incorrectly because of confusion among film, VHS, DVD, digital release dates etc.

Much Ado About Nothing (2011) is accessible through the database DIGITAL THEATRE PLUS, again via the UGA libraries. Navigation: www.libs.uga.edu-> databases-> Digital Theatre Plus->search title and scroll down to find the correct year.

Many of these films are also available through Prime, PBS, or various ad-supported streaming services such as Tubi or Vudu (though be warned that availability comes and goes).

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) is available only through Apple TV via subscription, unfortunately. If you miss our class screening, I suggest pooling your resources with a classmate and watching together.
