This course will introduce you to developments in American literature since the late 19th century. This historical period is roughly that of the modern era, and we will explore how a variety of writers responded to, imagined, and influenced modern American experience.   While this course imparts knowledge of particular authors and texts, it no less importantly aims to introduce you to the techniques of literary analysis; to develop your ability to analyze texts critically; to help you to synthesize and interpret cultural traditions; and to further your ability to express your ideas clearly and effectively in writing. Assignments include ELC discussion forums, two short essays, an in-class presentation, and a final project.
