This 2000-level survey course considers the literature of the North Atlantic archipelago ("the British Isles") from the early medieval period through the Restoration of the monarchy, i.e. from CE c. 731 to CE 1700: a thousand years of writing from these islands!

By the end of this class I hope you will be able to:

Identify some of the linguistic, stylistic, rhetorical, figurative, genre, and historical cues that can tell you whether a given piece of writing comes from the Early Medieval, Later Medieval, Renaissance, or Restoration periods in literary history

Analyze some of the literary and rhetorical effectiveness of those cues, including the writerly skill that goes into crafting them

Identify some of the multiple early Medieval, later Medieval, Renaissance, and Restoration languages, styles, and groups that created what later centuries called “British” literature
