This course will examine narratives by American Indian women. We will begin by examining how select writers and filmmakers use the historic power of Native women to encourage social change. We will then explore how narratives by American Indian women address U.S. history and its effects on Native women’s lives, with attention to such issues as gender roles, motherhood, spirituality, sexuality, land rights, and violence against women.  Finally, we will explore contemporary Native women activists and the way they use traditional Native gender roles (and/or revisions of these roles) as the basis for their activism.
