Learning How to Write Fiction with 'Global' Literature :

This class is designed for students who have a serious interest in fiction writing and have some workshop experience. Students will have to successfully complete “Introduction to Creative Writing” to enroll since this course demands a higher degree of commitment and standard than the gateway course in creative writing. This is an advanced fiction writing class, so the students bring their work to the class to receive feedback from their peers and also read a wide range of stories to understand the craft of writing. Thus, the goal of this course is to learn the craft of writing by reading other published writers and also produce one polished short story (3000 words ) by the end of the semester. Students will also be expected to write detailed critiques of the work of their peers.

The reading list is made up of a diverse list of writers. Here, I use diverse in the broadest sense of the term. By diverse I mean a wide variety of literary artists from around the world. We will read fiction by Toni Morrison, Nadine Gordimer, Ashapurna Debi, Banana Yoshimoto, Rebecca Roanhorse, Eka Kurniawan, Nuruddin Farah, China Mieville, Roxane Gay, Hari Kunzru, etc. The goal is to expand our idea of craft by closely reading master storytellers from around the world and also depart from our overdependence on western literature.
