When we say “composition” (as in this course’s formal title: “Advanced Composition”), what do we mean? Most of the time, we mean “writing.” But increasingly, writing classes incorporate media-rich (or “multimodal”) communication features: images, videos, hyperlinks, even games and web design. In this class, we’ll study what it means to compose in blended media, how to use multimodal features to complement traditional writing practices, and how multimodal theories change our understanding of writing and rhetoric. Alongside instruction in creating powerful, audience-aware essays and other written texts, students in this class will experiment with media-rich writing, perform research on specific multimodal genres, and practice applying media-rich writing strategies to writing in their academic and professional fields. Students will do deep analysis of visual interfaces, create multimodal research projects, and curate media-rich professional portfolios.
