The twentieth century was one of mass migration, displacement, exile, modes of resettling that unsettled residual notions of tribe, nativity, and nation. A dialectic was thereby set up between the imperialist mission played out in far-flung colonies around the globe, and the complex metropolitan adjustment to homeland security and the increasing influx of “alien” populations. This dialectic was eventually internalized as a model of human identity. The books we’ll read register this condition in varying degrees of explicitness. The theme of the course is "Close Encounters."
