This course will explore recent-historical and contemporary writing by a diverse array of American and international writers and artists. While I haven't finalized the reading list, the course will include writers such as: James Baldwin, Joan Didion, Michael Ondaatje, Adrienne Rich, Roberto Bolaño, Kiese Laymon, Terrance Hayes, Sarah Vap, Khaled Mattawa, Jesmyn Ward, Yrsa Daley-Ward, John Keene, Brian Blanchfield, and Christine Hume. We'll also consider films by directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Kathleen Collins, Ken Loach, Wong Kar-Wai, Barry Jenkins, and Ai Weiwei as well as TV work by Issa Rae and Donald Glover.
