ENGL4210: Old English Lit (52233)

Evans, Jonathan

TR 2 :00 PM

Park Hall 0145

This course in Old English Literature–excluding Beowulf –will be conducted in modern English, though our texts will all be in the original Old English language. The “hybridized” course will combine class meetings, asynchronous virtual meetings, online assignments, in-office tutorials, and independent research. The course will emphasize equally (1) translation and discussion of salient texts in Old English literature in class meetings and (2) individual guided research via tutorial meetings outside the regular class schedule. Students will be asked to choose one of the readings listed below, or by special request from off-list, and conduct individual research on a topic decided in dialogue with the instructor. Occasional interim oral/written reports will be required, but the final goal will be a research/term paper and oral examination concerning the text at the end of the semester. Students will be asked to memorize a passage from the text they select for focused research and analysis and write about it on their individual Final Exam (see below).
