The Roaring Twenties in Black and White

The exuberant decade of the 1920s erupted like a shiny rocket, fueled by jazz, bathtub gin, and sexual experimentation, yet it ended in the bust of the Great Depression.    This course will study the decade's turbulent history, and examine the works of art that were created by members of the Lost Generation, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Americans from both groups who decamped to Paris. Authors/artists we will consider include F. Scott Fitzgerald, Zora Neale Hurston, Ernest Hemingway, Langston Hughes, Aaron Douglas, Gertrude Stein, Edith Wharton, Dorothy Parker, Anita Loos, and Josephine Baker. We will review jazz, blues, and films of the period, especially those that concern the changing roles of women.
