ENGL6890: Research Methods (52256)

Romero, Channette

MW 10:10 AM

Park Hall 0251

The goal of this course is to help you improve your academic writing skills to the point where you can successfully produce a major writing project in your field of study, like a thesis chapter or an article for publication.

We will learn about the academic genres that MA and PhD students in English are expected to produce, such as:

  • Chapters for Masters theses and PhD dissertations
  • Articles for publication
  • Conference abstracts
  • CVs
  • Humanities grant applications

Students will conduct research on their own individual research projects, develop the skills they need to handle complex writing tasks, learn to write for different academic venues and audiences, and strengthen their critical revision skills. This profession-based approach to research methods will include discussing how to effectively conduct research in your field, how to publish, how to present at conferences, and how to network.

All of your writing assignments in the course will relate to your own individual research projects.  The course will culminate with students either producing a MA thesis chapter or an essay submitted for publication.
