This course will focus on poetry by women published in the past twenty years, so “contemporary” will be commensurate with the lifetimes of you, the students. We will read a number of book-length poems, a few collection of poems, and extracts from other books, including critical essays and interviews. Some of the poets will be coming to UGA, visiting the class and giving public readings (for which attendance is mandatory). Independent readings and tandem readings (two or three students together) will also factor into the curriculum.
