English 8750 CONTEMPORARY SOUTHERN LITERATURE

This seminar will examine the exciting literature that has been produced by writers of the U.S. South over the past twenty years.  We will consider the new historical fiction, multiethnic narratives, urban poetry, and drama that reflect the ever changing parameters of the region.   Special focus will be placed on immigration, transnational relations, postmodern writing, and the ways in which the U.S. South has played an unusually large part in national identity.
Writers to be considered: Ernest Gaines, James Wilcox, Madison Smartt Bell, Cristina Garcia, Edwidge Danticat, Cynthia Shearer, LeAnne Howe, Natasha Tretheway, Brenda Marie Osbey, Yusef Komunyakaa, Rita Dove, Alfred Uhry, Ellen Douglas, Tim Gautreaux, Olympia Vernon, Cormac McCarthy.  Critical essays by Patricia Yaeger, Michael Kreyling, Scott Romine, Jay Watson, Thadious Davis, Richard Gray, Leigh Anne Duck, Jennifer Greeson and others will complement our discussions.
