From Parliamentary papers to poetry; from literary criticism to love letters, polemics, and exposes; from parodies to memoirs, dramas, and short stories, this class will introduce students to the literature and culture of a long, dramatic, and, in many ways, still surprisingly immediate culture. As we read a Charles Dickens novel in its original installments, we will explore how generation after generation of Victorians engaged with crises over the forms and functions of literature itself.
