This course tracks the development of African American literary culture through the work of great Black writers across the 20th century. We'll discuss books in a range of genres (novels, essays, autobiography, poetry, plays). We'll also highlight particularly important cultural movements and moments (especially in film and Black music) that helped shape key Black literary imaginations of the modern eras. Over the course of the term we'll consider the work of writers such as: Jean Toomer, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Gwendolyn Brooks, James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Toni Morrison, Robert Hayden, Amiri Baraka, Audre Lorde, August Wilson, June Jordan and Yusef Komunyakaa.
