This iteration of the class will focus on memoirs themed to family and community by immigrant, people of color, and rural American women writers including Lucille Clifton, Tracy K.Smith, Natasha Trethewey, Tara Westover, and Robin Wall Kimmerer. In addition to submitting two essays, students will work together in small groups to develop a presentation about a cultural or historical topic related to one of the assigned writers, and collaborate in small groups to select, write about, and recommend a memoir for the entire class to read during the second half of the semester.
