English 4750: American Modernism

This course will provide an overview of modernist literature in the United States. We will read works by Gertrude Stein, T S Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Ernest Hemingway, Jean Toomer, Marianne Moore, Langston Hughes, H. D., Nella Larsen, and other American modernist authors. We will also read some of the little magazines that fostered modernist writing and discuss the relationship between the literary experiments of the early 20th century and the rapid change and profound upheaval in American society and culture that took place in that period.
