ENGL6900W: Academic Writing (60354)

Romero, Channette

W 9:10 AM

Park Hall 61

The goal of this course is to help students improve their academic writing skills in literary studies to the point where they can successfully produce a major research writing project.  Students will conduct research on their individually-chosen research projects, develop the skills they need to handle complex writing tasks, learn to write for different academic venues and audiences, and strengthen their critical revision skills. This profession-based approach will include learning strong writing habits, discussing how to publish in literary studies, how to present at conferences, how to craft an effective CV, and (depending on student interest) how to apply for humanities grants.  The course will culminate with students producing a substantial literary research project on a specialized topic of their choice, like a thesis/dissertation chapter (or two) or an essay submitted for publication.

Please note:  This course is focused on academic writing in literary studies.  It is discipline-specific. Graduate students in other disciplines will likely find the writing styles encouraged here to be inappropriate for their discplines.
