Nineteenth-Century British Novel (ENGL 4520)

The nineteenth century firmly cemented the predominance of the novel.  That said, the authorship, purpose, publication method, and subject matter of novels were certainly less set in stone.  Perhaps its tendency to shape-shift aided in the popularity of the literary genre: women and men wrote novels that were bound in three volumes or published in serial magazines and aimed to make readers cry, gasp, learn, and/or laugh.

While we certainly will only scratch the surface, in this class we will focus on reading as many different types of novels by as many diverse authors as we can.  We will focus on subgenres of the novel: courtship novels, silver fork novels, social problem novels, sensation novels, detective novels, governess novels, gothic novels, new woman novels, fantasy novels and science fiction.
