This class will align with the upcoming Spring and Fall 2023 online and in-person events called "The Genius of Phillis Wheatley Peters: The Poet and a Public Celebration of Her World."  Students will read poems by Wheatley as well as Honoree Fannone Jeffers The Age of Phiillis inspired by the author and her work. Students should plan to dedicate time outside of class to attending a minimum of three (3) online or in person events in this program and reporting on them.  In addition, we will discuss contemporary African American women poets, many influenced by Wheatley, such as Lucille Cifton, June Jordan, Tracy K. Smith, Camille Dungy, and others.
