An introduction to the culture and commerce of literary journals, this course examines the life cycle of literary journals; the people and processes involved in periodical publishing; and the history, business, economics, and ethics of the publishing industry. With literary journals as its focus, this class is, at once, 1) an intellectual inquiry into the particularities of reading and writing for the literary periodical, 2) a practical introduction to the business of periodical publishing, and 3) a workshop that prepares students for pursuing a career with a humanities degree. The class will be broken into formal lectures, discussion-based classes, and workshops.
