ENGL 4860:  Southeastern Native Literature and Film

This course will provide an introduction to Southeastern Native literature and film.  We will examine literature, films, and multimedia by Natives from tribes originally located in the Southeast (including, but not limited to, Cherokees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Muscogee/Creeks, and Seminoles).  We will pay particular attention to the way contemporary writers and filmmakers negotiate history and historical trauma, including the 19th century forced removal of several tribes west of the Mississippi River (commonly known as the “Trail of Tears”).  By examining Southeastern Native literature and film, students will gain an understanding of Southeastern tribal cultures, beliefs, and storytelling traditions.  Possible authors include Thomas King, LeAnne Howe, Daniel Heath Justice, Joy Harjo, Phillip Carroll Morgan, Jennifer Foerster, and others.  Possible filmmakers include Sterlin Harjo, Joseph Erb, Steven Paul Judd, Tracy Rector, and more.
