ENGL8600: Sem Modern Lit (56445)

Parkes, Adam

MW 9:10 AM

Park Hall 61

Seminar title: D.H. Lawrence

This seminar will read widely in Lawrence's fiction and poetry with particular attention to flashpoints and controversies, past and present.  Works to be studied will include Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, Lady Chatterley's Lover, and generous selections of Lawrence's short stories and poetry.  Students who take this seminar will become versed in current scholarship on Lawrence and his connections with other modern writers and artists. At the end of the term, we will consider fictionalizations of Lawrence's life by Helen Dunmore and Rachel Cusk.

Some of these books are quite long; reading ahead during the summer -- especially the four novels by Lawrence -- is strongly recommended.

We will use the paperback editions listed below.  With the exception of Sons and Lovers, all the Lawrence texts are based on the authoritative Cambridge edition.  You may need to order some of the texts from amazon.co.uk, so please plan ahead.
