Topics Course Title: “Contemporary Native Literature”

This course will provide an introduction to Contemporary North American Indigenous Literature.  Students will read Native literature published in the 21st century alongside key Indigenous Studies theory and criticism.  We will explore how texts from various genres negotiate history and its effects on Indigenous lives and homelands, with attention to such issues as oral storytelling traditions, gender and sexuality, environmental concerns, and the rise of Indigenous genre fiction, especially crime fiction and futurism.  We will examine how North American Indigenous writers experiment with literary forms to create new mediums to help Native peoples negotiate contemporary life.
