ENGL3800W: Intro Creative Writ (28005)

Kashyap, Aruni

T 2 :20 PM

Park Hall 0061

In this course, you will experiment with two creative genres—fiction and creative nonfiction—as a means of developing different imaginative approaches to experience.

This is a writing-intensive class. This means the emphasis will be on generating a lot of raw material and advancing a chunk of this work toward completion and I will help you in the process by providing feedback and organizing a safe workshop space.

One of the major ways a writer develops their crafts is by reading attentively. To achieve this purpose, I will be exposing you to readings that will help you grow as a writer.

During the semester, we will discuss a set of craft elements and you will be expected to apply those craft elements in your own writing and also while critiquing the work of your peers. In short, this course will teach you the basic techniques of the three genres, how to apply those in your own writing and how to look at literature from the practitioner's point of view. No textbook is required. Electronic files of all the readings will be provided. If you think you are a storyteller, you should be in this course.
