This course will explore recent and contemporary writing by a diverse array of American and international writers and artists. While I haven't finalized the reading / listening / viewing list, the course will include writers such as: Kiese Laymon, Cathy Park Hong, Tommy Orange, Binyavanga Wainaina, Hua Hsu, Jamal Brinkley and Jesmyn Ward. We'll also consider writing more widely than what's printed in books in ways that include writing for contemporary music, films and TV by artists such as Eric Byler, Tony Gatliff, Barry Jenkins, Issa Rae Diop, Michaela Coel, Sterlin Harjo, Taika Waititi, and Kegiso Lediga.
