This course examines the life and writings of Herman Melville. Although he is popularly remembered as the author of Moby-Dick (1851), Melville had a long and varied literary career, producing a wide range of intriguing and illuminating short stories, novels, poems, and essays. In this class, we will study Melville’s entire oeuvre from beginning to end, focusing on the evolution of his style, philosophy, and aesthetics. We will also discuss the afterlife of Melville’s writing and consider how it has influenced later art, fiction, and thought.
