Intermediate Fiction

Fall 2024

Course Description

This class is a deep dive into the craft of writing fiction. Throughout the semester, we will read a wide range of texts: two novels, short stories, and craft essays by diverse authors writing in styles that range from the traditional to the wildly experimental. We will pay close attention to craft in this class, studying core elements of fiction like characterization, plot, and dialogue, but we will pay extra attention to the craft of setting, examining how place helps shape characters and conflict.

You will write your own fiction in our class: short exercises and two full-length short stories. You will receive feedback on your work in workshops that prioritize productive, kind feedback. And you will get the chance to learn more about literary journals. Each person in our class will pick two, explore their content, study their aesthetic, and share their findings with the class.

Expect to read and write a lot. Expect to read and write thoughtfully. Expect to cheer on and learn from your peers. Together, we will consider how fiction works, what it means, and what it means to us.
