Park Hall 0061

Throughout this course, we will read and write three subgenres of fiction—the short story, flash, and micro—to discover our own fascinations and talents in narrative on the page. Lessons on craft elements including plot, structure, point of view, character development, dialogue, voice, and revision will help us express ourselves vividly, concretely, and imaginatively. Assignments will result in a diverse body of written work in the form of prose exercises, reading responses, manuscript drafts, workshop letters, and reflections. Classmates will impart constructive feedback to each other in workshop, and the instructor will provide individual revision guidance. Surveyed authors will include Katherine Mansfield, Leslie Nneka Arimah, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, Jamaica Kincaid, Isaac Babel, Ernest Hemingway, ZZ Packer, Angela Carter, Shirley Jackson, Daniil Kharms, Jorge Luis Borges, Sherman Alexie, Fyodor Dostoevsky, and Tobias Wolff, among others.
