Before 1440, all literature in Europe was copied by hand and circulated in manuscript. What was it like to read (and write) such books? The material form of the book is important to how readers receive and interpret the text. In this course we will learn the skills needed to read and understand late medieval English literature in this hand-written context. This will include studying medieval handwriting and looking for evidence of a manuscript’s history beyond the text. We will work from facsimiles, digital copies, and visits to UGA Special Collections, in parallel with modern textual editions, in order to develop our own research projects on a medieval manuscript.
