Shakespeare I

GRADS: I recommend you purchase, rent, or borrow copies of the ARDEN Shakespeare, 3rd series, for the plays by Shakespeare we're studying, as well as consulting the Bedford, which I have assigned for the undergraduate section. I will put a copy of the Bedford on reserve reading at the library so that you can consult the background essays, but the Arden-- the scholarly edition of record – and its apparatus is the level at which you should be working.

Books

William Shakespeare, The Bedford Shakespeare, ed. Russ McDonald and Lena Cowen Orlin (Bedford/St. Martin's)

  • ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0312439636
  • ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0312439637

(You must have the Bedford Shakespeare; it includes invaluable background essays on the historical period and on performance practices that I will be requiring you to read. Used, rented, Kindle etc. is fine as long as you can read the essays and cite them by page number and read the plays and cite them by act, scene, and line number.)
