Eighteenth-Century Literature and the Gods

This seminar confronts the proliferation of deities and divinized humans during a supposed age of secularization (1660 to 1800). We relate the Enlightenment fascination with theological conflict and coexistence to the escalating projects of European empire and slavery. Thus, the course material will be relevant to students interested in applying postcolonial methods to colonial literature as well as those who wish to explore the relationship between literature and belief. Primary texts may include work by John Milton, Margaret Cavendish, Daniel Defoe, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Voltaire, Phillis Wheatley Peters, Ignatius Sancho, Helen Maria Williams, and Sake Dean Mahomet.

Fulfills the pre-1800 requirement.
