This course will provide an introduction to Southeastern Native literature and film. We will examine fiction, poetry, essays, and/or films by Natives from tribes originally located in the Southeast (including, but not limited to, Cherokees, Chickasaws, Choctaws, Muscogee Creeks, and Seminoles). We will pay particular attention to the way contemporary writers and filmmakers negotiate history, including the 19th century forced removal of several tribes west of the Mississippi River (commonly known as the “Trail of Tears”). By examining Southeastern Native literature and film, students will gain an understanding of Southeastern tribal cultures, practices, and storytelling traditions.  Possible authors include Joy Harjo, Daniel Heath Justice, LeAnne Howe, Phillip Carroll Morgan, Andrea Rogers, and others. Possible filmmakers include by Sterlin Harjo, Steven Paul Judd, and Mark D. Williams.
