The video game industry is a powerhouse of the global entertainment industries, making more money than the film, television, and music industries combined. More than half of Americans regularly play games, from mobile games to hours-long adventure games. Despite their economic and cultural heft, video games are often dismissed as "just games," unimportant only for the most deeply invested gaming fans.

In this course, we will learn how to take video games seriously. We will analyze games as digital media texts, creative cultural objects, and industrial products. Through playing, discussing, and writing about games, we will explore the power that play has to create and critique our economic and social worlds.
