The primary objective of this course is to provide students with the necessary philosophical background for their future studies of contemporary literary criticism and theory. The course will be organized as a historical survey of some of the most influential philosophical, theoretical, and critical trends from the late 18th to the early 21st century. We will start the semester with a discussion of philosophical texts that constituted the intellectual matrix from which modern critical theory emerged. The second half of the semester will be devoted to a set of specific contemporary debates in critical theory.
